Twitter accounts of global personalities were hacked in Bitcoin scam
The official accounts of Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates also requested donations in the cryptocurrency.
A fake tweet from Bill Gates' account read: "Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time. I am doubling all payments sent to my BTC address for the next 30 minutes. You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000. Only going on for 30 minutes! Enjoy!"
On the other hand, a fake tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk's account read, "Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time. I am doubling all payments sent to my BTC address for the next 30 minutes. You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000. Only going on for 30 minutes! Enjoy!"
Twitter said it was a "co-ordinated" attack targeting its employees "with access to internal systems and tools".
"We know they [the hackers] used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf," the company said in a series of tweets .
It added that "significant steps" were taken to limit access to such internal systems and tools while the company's investigation was ongoing.
Meanwhile, Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey tweeted : "Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened."
Others targeted included:
1) the rapper Kanye West
2) reality TV star Kim Kardashian West
3) former US President Obama
4) former US Vice-President Joe Biden, who is the current Democratic presidential candidate
5) media billionaire Mike Bloomberg
6) the ride-sharing app Uber
7) the iPhone-maker Apple
